"Adapted into contemporary use without losing the authenticity of the building"

Harat Al Bab is a historic treasure as well as a prime example of the traditional Makkah architecture. The brief called for a renovation of the existing 150 year-old structure while adding an annex, with a design that maintains the traditional look of the two components in a unified building entity. This project maintains a continuous flow of Islamic design from the exterior of the building into the interior spaces. The building used craftsmanship from five Islamic countries. It was the first and only building to be renovated.

The final structure transformed the building - originally split into two - into a singular structure that has been adapted into contemporary use without losing the authenticity of the building.
